Surrounded by a rich musical and Southern culture, the Macon Film Festival celebrates independent films while promoting film-making for entertainment, inspiration, education and economic development in Georgia’s central city. This four-day festival screens imaginative and independent film in a variety of genres from local, regional, national and international filmmakers at historic theaters, along with workshops and ever-popular after parties at hip venues throughout downtown Macon. - Macon Film Festival celebrates its 14th year August 15-18, 2019.
- New this year, Macon Film Festival introduces two new competition categories: Fulldome and Virtual Reality, setting this film festival apart from others around the country.
- The Macon Film Festival screens independent films from around the world in multiple theatres citywide, including the Museum of Arts and Sciences’ state-of-the-art Mark Smith Planetarium and downtown’s historic Douglass Theatre, Hargray Capitol Theatre, Theatre Macon and Grand Opera House.
- The festival features film spotlight film screenings, celebrity guests, special screenings, and workshops throughout.
- This year’s special screenings include an intimate documentary about comediane Gild Radner with LOVE, GILDA, IF I LEAVE HERE TOMORROW: A FILM ABOUT LYNYRD SKYNRD, and a specially commissioned fulldome film, SONOLUMIN.
- Special guests this year include Lisa Dapolito, director of LOVE, GILDA and noted fulldome filmmaker Diana Reichenbach, debuting SONOLUMIN.
- Past special guests have included Andrew McCarthy, Burt Reynolds, Matthew Modine, Karen Black, Illeana Douglass, Nick Moran, Tony Hale, James Ponsoldt, and Macon natives Carrie Preston and Jack McBrayer.
- Films compete in the following categories: Music; Documentary; LGBT; Narrative Feature; Narrative Shorts; Georgia Made; Fulldome; Virtual Reality, and Student Shorts.
Free filmmaking workshops are held daily for all festival attendees. - A Media Room, VIP/Filmmaker Lounge and Festival Headquarters are open daily during the festival.
