Do you get that “Oh, to be a kid again…” feeling when dropping your children off at camp? Well, one north Georgia town invites you to join in the Spring Break fun with a camp for all ages, and there’s plenty do in the evenings when camp ends. The place is Cartersville, Georgia. Known for its magnificent Smithsonian Affiliate Museums–Booth Western Art Museum and Tellus Science Museum, the community welcomes many visitors throughout the summer, yet this year is banking on a busy Spring Break week April 2, when the Bartow History Museum hosts “Tomorrow’s Treasures” Spring Break Camp.
“Tomorrow’s Treasures” is a series of four, two-hour camps focusing on taking care of family heirlooms and passing on personal history from one generation to the next. Unsure of what to do with Grandpa’s uniform, mom’s wedding dress or that old quilt in the cedar chest? Monday’s camp will teach you how to best care for antique and vintage fabrics around the house. From family Bibles, to old enlistment papers, newspaper clippings, or family letters, written history will be the focus on Tuesday as campers are taught the best ways to preserve paper objects. On day three, participants are encouraged to bring a box or album of family photos as the Photography Curator from the neighboring Booth Western Art Museum will discuss caring for those precious black and whites and early tintypes. Finally, on Thursday, the camp will dive into those treasured family recipes, and will help you decipher those early ingredients for the modern family kitchen.
Visitors to Cartersville will also want to plan on multiple visits to Tellus Science Museum as they host their Spring Break Science Escape with each day focusing on a specific STEM career–science, technology, engineering and math. One of the exciting days planned will allow visitors to see the da Vinci surgical system demonstrated by the Gordon Hospital Robotic Surgery team. Another career day will focus on astronomy and meteorology, with guests from WSB-TV Atlanta.
There’s plenty for the family to explore after the day camps end. Climb ancient Indian mounds. Walk through a bridge built with wooden pegs. See a two-room schoolhouse where students brought firewood to keep warm while learning. Hike to the top of mountain for a bird’s-eye view of the largest land mass on the National Register of Historic Places. Then, take a fishing trip where guides will lead you to the “honey hole.”
