The mountains draw you into Ellijay, Georgia, but the lake and rivers bring out your inner-child, offering boundless adventures. Georgia’s “Apple Capital” is 80 miles north of Atlanta and just 65 miles from Chattanooga, Tennessee. Ellijay offers the quaintness of an idyllic mountain town with its adorable shops, delicious restaurants and peaceful lodging options, coupled with big-time excitement on the rapids that rush through this outdoor gem. Whether you are looking for fun with the family, a group of friends or an exciting trip for two, ride these waters for an expedition to remember.
Tubing and Kayaking
Grab a tube and float one of the gorgeous three rivers that run through Ellijay–the Cartecay, Ellijay and Cooosawattee. Each river offers a different experience with its unique twists and serene scenery. For a perfectly-paced excursion that suits the whole family, check out the Coosawattee Tubing Company. For a more thrilling float, dive into the Cartecay River Experience. Buses will take your crew to and from the river, so all you have to do is sit back, soak in the sun and drift into lasting memories. If you’d rather paddle your way into a good time, kayak rentals are also available. Go here for rental information.
Rafting
Take the plunge into America’s favorite river–the Ocoee River, an easy drive north of Ellijay near the Tennessee state line. Hearts will race while rowing through continuous class three and four whitewater rapids. In between adrenaline inducing torrents, breathe in the fresh mountain air while gliding through the beautiful gorge inside the Cherokee National Forest.
There are several rafting companies to explore throughout the area, book one here.
Fishing
Ellijay’s miles of rivers and streams are filled with large fresh trout of all kinds. Grab a fishing buddy and reel in brown trout, rainbow trout and brook trout in the cool mountain waters. No experience? No problem. Upper River Adventures and Reel ‘Em In Guide Service both offer fly fishing lessons. For spotted or striped bass, cast a line in the sparkling waters of Carter’s Lake. Find an area-fishing guide here.
Carter’s Lake
Speaking of Carter’s Lake, it’s the highest earth-filled dam east of the Mississippi River. Head to Carter’s Lake Marina to load up on snacks. Then, rent a pontoon boat that seats up to 15 people. Spend the day cruising the 3,200 acres of deep, clear waters and 65 miles of undeveloped, pristine shoreline. Or, grab a blanket and head to the beach at Harris Branch Park or any one of seven other day-use areas, which include parks and picnic shelters. Launch a kayak from Ridgeway Boat Ramp and paddle to Tumbling Waters Water Fall for a spectacular view.
