Feel worlds away, less than an hour from Atlanta
Situated on the storybook site of an 1840s Southern estate, Barnsley Resort is where history, outdoor adventure and Southern comfort magically come together as one. Not far from downtown Cartersville and easily accessible, just 60 miles north of Atlanta and south of Chattanooga, this 3,000-acre, dog-friendly resort-meets-village playground offers cottage accommodations, authentic Southern cuisine–with hospitality to match–and onsite activities for days, all complementing the iconic manor house ruins worthy of a swoon, and a history lesson or two.
What to do
With 90 guest rooms and suites situated within a variety of 36 spacious cottages–choose from Manor, Suite, Arbor and Estate options–set in an English-inspired, pedestrian village, Barnsley Resort is also home to historic ruins of an original manor, called Woodlands, a 19th century estate built by Godfrey Barnsley for his wife, Julia. An 1,800-acre hunting preserve located less than five miles from the resort offers dove, quail, pheasant, turkey and duck hunting, available seasonally. Beyond hunting, guests can tee off at the 18-hole Fazio-designed golf course, make memories while horseback riding along picturesque trails, fish and canoe in the 10-acre lake, test their aim at the 26-station sporting clays course, and hike and bike throughout the property’s many trails.
Relax
After an action packed day, unwind at The Spa at Barnsley Resort. True story: they harvest their own loofa gourds onsite, yours to keep after your treatment! Indulge in options like the Relax and Refresh Body Treatment, blending the calming benefits of lavender with refreshing mint, a Deep Forest Detox–a detoxifying scrub and mask featuring sarsaparilla, honey tobacco and clay to exfoliate dry skin followed by hot towel compression therapy with oils, or a Reiki session, a Japanese technique used to relieve stress, promote deep relaxation and encourage natural healing. For a little more privacy, ask for a masseuse to come to your cottage. When temperatures rise, cool off with a dip in the seasonal saltwater pool.
Where to eat
With its English hunting lodge atmosphere and views of the golf course, The Woodlands Grill is the place to gather and indulge in home-cooked Southern fare. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, the restaurant offers Southern regional comfort food that’s delicious any time of the day, plus an extensive wine, craft beer and spirit list. For those looking for a little privacy, try the restaurant’s cozy Wine Library.
At the opposite end of the “main road,” stands the Rice House, a 19th-century farmhouse restaurant which doubles as a slice of history. The structure was originally a home on Rice Plantation in nearby Rome, Georgia, that was delicately relocated to Barnsley Resort. The culinary team pays homage to its Southern heritage, and serves modern farmhouse cuisine, with a menu that changes every other week, if not weekly.
Enjoy al fresco dining–and a cold one!–under the stars or throughout the day on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in the Beer Garden, which offers a casual menu that pairs perfectly with over 30 craft beer selections.
