Perhaps an unlikely spot for saying, “I do,” Albany, Georgia, delights brides with unique wedding venues, activities and accommodations
ALBANY, GEORGIA – MARCH 2016 – Tucked away in the fields of South Georgia lies an unsuspecting wedding destination just outside of Albany, Georgia, about an hour off I-10 and 30 minutes from I-75. With more than 1,600 acres of plantation farm land, Resora at Cypress Pond Plantation, now owned by Charles and Shirley Sherrod, has a history dating to the 1840s. This idyllic working farm is the scene of myriad wedding ceremonies, including those of celebrities like American Idol champion Phillip Phillips and his longtime girlfriend Hannah Blackwell.
It’s no surprise why. After being whisked through the impressive gates, groves of manicured magnolia, pecan and pine trees lead guests to a grand entrance with a sweeping front porch. Inside the antebellum plantation home, 7,000 square feet of event space capable of accommodating 120 guests, plus overflow room for up to 150, welcomes visitors like a scene out of “Gone with the Wind.”
Southern charm oozes from the décor, with floor-to-ceiling draperies lining the windows and sparkly chandeliers lighting the space, which includes two furnished living room parlors, a dining hall with fireplace, bachelor’s room, butler’s kitchen and an on-site chapel complete with 12-foot windows and a stained glass scene providing the ultimate ambiance for saying, “I do.”
With overnight accommodations in the plantation’s master suite, featuring two bathrooms, a living suite and claw foot tub, couples can stay onsite at Resora. The junior executive suite also features a claw foot tub. Nearby, four cabins accommodate extended family overnight.
If you go
Spend the day rocking on the porch of one of the rental cabins at Resora. Catch up with friends and family while fishing the on-site pond. Plan a pre- or post-wedding excursion to nearby Still Pond Vineyards where you can savor a winery tour and tasting or schedule a quail hunting outing at neighboring Wynfield Plantation.
Not far from Resora, in downtown Albany, additional lodging options at Albany’s Merry Acres Inn make it easy to accommodate guests from near and far. Part of the Stewbos Restaurant Group, The Catch Seafood and Oyster Bar sets the scene for a rehearsal dinner with mouth-watering seafood like Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes and Oysters Rockefeller, in a contemporary atmosphere.
Cabins at Resora can also be reserved for weekend or week-long getaways.
